Let’s be honest, nobody liked Iron Fist
When Netflix first announced they were making shows about four street-level Marvel heroes – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist – it seemed like a cannot-fail proposition.
And for three of them, it was. Daredevil brought moody NY vigilante action and the best villain of all the Marvel movies and shows. Jessica Jones was brutal look at PTSD and abuse relationships through the lens of a superhero show. And Luke Cage cleverly integrated the modern African-American experience into its stories.
Iron Fist though? Sheeesh. What was meant to be a kick-ass martial arts show instead had a boring dude from Game of Thrones who couldn’t fight and barely any action. It was dull and uninteresting, and almost derailed the Netflix Marvel strand – The Defenders, the big team-up mini-series that should have been the culmination of all the hype, was met with general apathy from audiences.
The other shows have continued on ok – and The Punisher even spun out of Daredevil. Iron Fist did have a second season, which according to those who hadn’t already given up on the show that it was a genuine improvement.
But it was too little, too late.
Netflix have now announced that they have cancelled the show after just two series.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant confirmed that “Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix”.
“Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners,” the statement continued. “We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”
Finn Jones starred as the title character in the show.
