Netflix’s gritty new documentary is like a modern day version of Narcos

Paul Moore

This looks like a really good watch.

Given the popularity of Narcos, Sicario and the documentary Cartel Land, it’s clear that plenty of people are extremely interested in the narcotics trade. If this is something that piques your interest, you’ll be delighted to know that Netflix has added a new documentary series about the modern-day drugs industry.

Filmed from the perspectives of dealers, users, and the police, Dope offers a no-holds-barred look at the war on drugs. Having seen the trailer, we’re reminded of that brilliant quote from Carver in The Wire. He believed that the war on drugs was a gimmick because in his own words “wars end.”

Each episode is only 45 minutes and the footage is incredibly immersive. Here’s what you can expect to see from each episode.

America’s Cup of Coffee – On the rough streets of Oakland, law enforcement searches for a mysterious RV rumored to be driven by a high-profile drug distributor.

Once You See It, You Can Never Unsee It – Addicts, dealers, and law enforcement officials speak about Baltimore’s transformation into “the heroin capital of America.”

Even if They Didn’t Pay Me, I’d Still Do It – South of the border, drug traffickers use every trick in the book to push mass amounts of marijuana into the United States.

Is It Dangerous? Absolutely It’s Dangerous – As Memorial Day weekend approaches in Chicago, cops strive to get weapons off the street while drug dealers prepare for an influx of buyers.

Oddly, the trailer for the series hasn’t been made public yet but you can look at it here.
