Netflix’s new crime drama series looks fantastic

This could be your next addiction.

With The Sinner and Mindhunter proving to be two of the most popular additions to Netflix in recent memory, it’s clear that the appetite for true crime drama remains as strong as ever.

Well, if you’re already drawing up your list of must-see shows in 2018, Seven Seconds looks absolutely essential.

Ok, what’s it about?

In a society that’s fraught with racial tension, sensational headlines, and an audience who would rather be entertained than informed, seven seconds can mean life or death. The new Netflix original series will give viewers a glimpse into the human stories behind the headlines.

The very first episode revolves around Brenton Butler and his family. After a white cop accidentally hits and critically injures a black teenager, a northeastern city explodes with racial tensions. To compound matters, the situation threatens to explode after an attempted cover-up is revealed. What unfolds is dubbed the “trial of the century” but will justice prevail?

What really sets this mini-series apart is the talent that’s involved, both on-screen and off.

If you’re a fan of The Wire then you’ll be delighted to know that Seven Seconds has secured two directors from the greatest show of all time (Yes, The Wire is still the greatest show of all time)

To make things even better, Gavin O’Connor is also directing an episode. In case you’re not familiar with his work, he’s the genius that made Warrior – the superb MMA drama featuring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton.

Seven Seconds is developed byVeena Sud (The Killing) and the series will star two-time Emmy winner Regina King (American Crime) alongside breakout British actress Clare-Hope Ashitey (Doctor Foster), Russell Hornsby (Fences), Beau Knapp (Sand Castle), Michael Mosely (Ozark), David Lyons (Safe Haven), Raul Castillo (Special Correspondents), and Zackary Momoh (A United Kingdom).

The first teaser has been released – aptly, it’s quite short – but the series will be available to watch on Netflix from February 23.
