Nicolas Cage’s new thriller has 98% on Rotten Tomatoes

One of Hollywood’s most puzzling personalities is back with a bang

At last, we have another Nicolas Cage film to get our hands and by the sounds of it, this one actually falls into the so weird and left-field it’s good category. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Pig.

Here’s your brief synopsis: Cage plays a reclusive truffle hunter and former chef of fine-dining cuisine, living in the woods, whose truffle pig goes missing in mysterious circumstances. A tale as old as time.

The trailer is some ride alone, so who knows how the full movie leaves you feeling? Well, judging by the audience who reviewed it on Rotten Tomatoes, the answer is satisfied.

The movie released just over a week ago in the US and it is currently sitting at a staggering 98% on the movie and TV review aggregator. These figures can always be a bit deceiving depending on the sample size but to get this score out of 121 reviews is pretty good going.

While the premise might sound pretty specific, the underlying themes and character study are said to be the movies strong point. Thrillist‘s Emma Stefansky compared the main character, Rob’s tale as similar to the one of vengeance told in the first John Wick film – a parallel many are making.

The Independent‘s Clémence Michallon said that Pig “should be too weird to work” and “could have been a trainwreck. Instead, it’s a masterpiece”. She went on to say that Cage’s performance is “understated and powerful” – a tone the Wicker Man actor rarely hits, as much as we do love him.

Anybody who has watched Community and saw that scene knows that Nicolas Cage’s track record is more up and down than the random changes in volume he uses at random intervals during a seemingly straightforward bit of dialogue.

However, by the sounds of it, this latest effort is a hit. This enthralling albeit beguiling thriller – written and directed by Vanessa Block and Michael Sarnoskiby – drops in the UK on August 20th and, yes, we will be watching.
