She will be the first gay superhero to lead a TV show
Orange Is The New Black’s Ruby Rose has been cast as The Batwoman, in The CW ‘Arrowverse’ series of TV shows.
The character will debut in Arrow, and then go on to star in her own show in the 2019-2020 TV season.
The CW also confirmed that the character will be a lesbian – meaning that if the show is picked up, she will be the first gay character to lead a live-action superhero TV show.
A version of Batwoman first appeared in the comic books in 1956, but Kate Kane, the current incarnation, made her debut in 2006. He solo series, by writer Greg Rucka and artist J. H. Williams III received much critical acclaim, and was one of the most high-profile LGBTQ characters in comics.
The CW’s ‘Arrowverse’ of superhero shows includes Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. It was recently announced that Supergirl would be introducing TV’s first transgender superhero.
Ruby Rose is best known for starring as Stella Carlin in Orange Is The New Black, and also appeared in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Pitch Perfect 3.
