Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy to host own 6 Music radio show

The actor is taking over Guy Garvey’s slot on the popular radio station

Fans desperate to get their fill of Cillian Murphy before the fifth season of Peaky Blinders premieres later this year can indulge in the Irish actor’s charming tones with his new radio show.

BBC Radio 6 Music have handed Murphy the reins to Guy Garvey’s Sunday afternoon show that runs between 2pm and 4pm.

The star of Dunkirk and 28 Days Later played guitar and performed vocals for a variety of bands while growing up in Cork, almost choosing a career in music over film, although he has since scratched that particular itch, directing the video for the band Money’s single ‘Hold Me Forever’.

“As a music lover, mixtape obsessive and long-time 6 Music fan I couldn’t be more chuffed to be asked to sit in for Guy on his hiatus,” he said after the announcement.

“His show has been a constant companion for me and my family on Sunday afternoons for many years now, and it will be an honour to pick the tunes in that slot for a while. 6 Music is the best radio station in the world and I look forward to becoming a temporary houseguest!”

Murphy is expected to relinquish control of the show once Garvey finishes working on Elbow’s new album in the summer.

“I am taking a couple of months off to concentrate on the final stages of Elbow’s next record. Murphy is a bit too good actually,” said the Mancunian singer of his temporary replacement.

“I’ve heard him before and he knows his onions. I obviously have to watch my back, but he’s nowhere near as good looking as me so I’ll win on that front.”

Head of 6 Music, Paul Rodgers, added: “We’re delighted Cillian will be joining 6 Music for the next few months. His music selections are always interesting and I think listeners will love hearing him on 6 Music on Sunday afternoons.”
