Pascal took on the role for a comedy sketch
Super Mario fans have jokingly called for Pedro Pascal to replace Chris Pratt in The Super Mario Bros. Movie after the actor embodied the role for a Saturday Night Live sketch.
Airing over the weekend, the three minute long skit saw Pascal become beloved plumber in a spoof live-action remake of the game inspired by HBO’s critically-acclaimed The Last Of Us, which stars Pascal.
The short mock trailer shows Mario having to smuggle Princess Peach through a dystopian version of the Mushroom Kingdom.
In the actual film, set to be released later this year, Mario will be played by Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt, with Charlie Day as Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach – something which has sparked some criticism of the film’s “all-white” cast.
Ever since the first trailer was released for the Mario film though, there has also been discontent among many about the decision to cast Pratt as the iconic Nintendo character.
Fans are unhappy that Pratt is voicing the role using pretty much his normal American voice, with not a hint of Italian to be heard.
In sharp contrast, Pascal delivers Mario’s catchphrases in an accent far more true to the character, even if it is in an over-the-top, dramatic way for the sketch.

The sketch went down an absolute storm, being liked almost 89,000 times and clocking up more than 13 million views on Twitter.
And many were left stunned by how well Pascal seemed to fit the role of Mario, with several joking that there should be a last-minute recasting of in for the Mario film later this year.
One person wrote: “It’s not too late to replace chris pratt with pedro pascal as mario, right?????”

Another fan said: “I’m not even joking…pedro pascal mario is infinitely better than chris pratt mario”.
And a third added: “The Pedro Pascal #SNL Mario bit is going to be better than the actual Mario movie.”
The sketch sparked a number of memes as well.

Look, if we can have horror movie interpretations of Winnie the Pooh and the Grinch, why not have a gritty, dystopian Mario series?
