WATCH: German awards ceremony descends into farce as Ryan Gosling lookalike picks up award for Ryan Gosling

When somebody starts their speech "Good evening! I am Ryan Gosling...", it's a bit of a giveaway...

He is the cut of the Gosling to be fair.

“Men hold on to your wives and wives hold on to your men, here is the one and only Ryan Gosling,” announced the presenter, Steven Gaetjen, at the Goldene Kamera awards in Hamburg on Tuesday night.

Except, it wasn’t Ryan Gosling who came forward to collect yet another award for La La Land, but Ludwig Lehner, a chef from Munich, who took to the stage and made an acceptance speech while Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and other A-list stars wore baffled expressions in the audience.

Lehner’s appearance on stage was the result of a stunt concocted by two comedians, Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, who set up a fake agency claiming they could book Gosling (who, they claimed, happened to be in Hamburg recording a commercial) to appear at the awards ceremony on the condition that he would win an award.

In a YouTube video documenting the prank, they claimed that organisers responded to them within 90 seconds.

Despite their initial suspicion that it wouldn’t work in the initial planning stages (it took about six weeks in total), the prank itself couldn’t have gone much better, with Lehner, who bears only a passing resemblance to Gosling, clearly revelling in his moment in the spotlight.

Embarrassing enough for the organisers to be fair, but at least they have the consolation that it didn’t even come close to the farce that happened at the Oscars last month.
