It was a sad end to Christmas Day 2016.

The news broke that beloved singer George Michael had passed away aged just 53. Michael died “peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” according to a statement from his publicist.

Tributes from fans and celebrities around the world flooded social media last night, recalling Michael’s great talent and the incredible legacy of music that he leaves behind.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar attempted to join in the tributes on Twitter, but unfortunately confused George Michael with fellow pop star Boy George.

Quoting one of the Culture Club singer’s hits “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, she hoped Boy George would ‘rest in peace’.

The mistake was retweeted hundreds of times before fans pointed it out; the tweet was then swiftly deleted.

Gellar then tweeted a correction.
