Could Jackie Chan be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The director this year’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has said that he would love to cast martial arts legend Jackie Chan in the movie’s sequel.
Released theatrically back in August before heading to Disney+ a few weeks later, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings saw star Simu Liu become Marvel’s first Asian superhero in a story that paired him alongside Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Tony Leung and Sir Ben Kingsley as he attempted to gain control of the mystic and powerful 10 rings from his estranged and dangerous father.
With a sequel confirmed earlier this month, rumours have already started to swirl about who might join Liu in this still-in-development follow-up – and according to the film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton, it could feature a legend of the martial arts movie genre.
Speaking to movie site CinemaBlend, Cretton admitted that having Chan star in one of his films has been “a lifelong dream” before confirming that he’d love him to be part of Shang-Chi’s cinematic future.
“Yeah, let’s put that out there,” he told the outlet.
While Cretton’s enthusiasm for the star is strong, it’s important to point out that no official discussions have taken place just yet. As it stands, the only casting news that has been confirmed is the return of Liu as the titular Shang-Chi and Zhang as his on-screen sister Xialing.
Chan is yet to respond to the comments and the movie’s release date has not yet been confirmed – so at this stage anything is possible.
With such a storied, fight-based filmography under his belt – from 1985’s Police Story, the hugely popular Rush Hour trilogy, 2000’s Shanghai Noon and its 2003 follow-up Shanghai Knights, both co-starring Owen Wilson – we’re sure Chan would be a welcome member of the MCU.
