Shawshank Redemption voted best film ever in Twitter poll

Charlie Herbert

Over 13,000 users voted in the poll

Yet again, The Shawshank Redemption has claimed a title as the greatest film of all time, as it fought off competition from three other classics in the poll.

In the Twitter poll the top four rated films of IMDb were pitted against each other. So that’s The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and The Dark Knight.

But the prison drama starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins was the clear winner, taking home 47.4% of the vote. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight was second with 33.9% of votes, and continues to prove that it has a good case for being the best film of the 21st century. The Godfather and its sequel brought up the rear with 11.2% and 7.4% of the vote respectively.

Of course there’s no doubt that the 1994 classic it is one of only a handful of films that can lay claim to being the GOAT of films. It has held the top spot on IMDb since 2008, and regularly features high up the list on any ranking or poll looking for the greatest film.

And if it might not be quite at the top of the list for some, it surely takes home another title instead as the best film not to have won an Oscar. That’s right, the Shawshank Redemption did not win a single Academy Award despite receiving seven nominations.

In fairness, it lost out to Forrest Gump in the Best Picture category, and a little known film called Pulp Fiction also managed to pick up a couple of awards. What a year for film that was.
