The label launched his career

Snoop Dogg has purchased the record label which gave him his first leg-up into the industry.

In 1993 the US rapper released his debut album Doggystyle with Death Row Records, founded by Dr. Dre one year earlier.

Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr, bought the firm from the MNRK Music Group – although the figure he paid hasn’t been released.

“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value,” the star said.

He continued: “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me.”

Death Row also had on its books the late Tupac Shakur however the label filed for bankruptcy in 2006.

Snoop left the label in 1998 after he alleged they were holding back on paying him royalties amid a row over his contract.

The 50-year-old also became a strategic consultant for the brand last year.

Snoop is one of the biggest rappers on the planet. He has sold over 35 million records worldwide and released 17 solo studio albums, the last of which came out in 2019.
