The multi-millionaire dollar deal will see the series renewed up until season 30 with movies on the cards as well
South Park creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, have signed an absolutely staggering new $900 million deal with multinational media corporation, Viacom, to make a slew of new series and feature-length films.
Pulling just shy (well, $100m) of a billion dollars, this new deal will see them make at least another five series of the show, taking them to an incredible 30 seasons on the air.
The next number 25, airs in 2022, making it the second-longest-running animated TV series in terms of the number of series released, though Family Guy beats it in terms of age. Can you guess which is first?…
Perhaps the most interesting part about the entire deal, however, is that a reported 14 spin-off movies are set to be made for US streaming service, Paramount Plus – a recent subsidiary of Viacom.
Viacom announced a plan to partner with Paramount and Sky to broadcast the show in the UK, though the usual syndication on Comedy Central is expected to remain largely the same.
In the US, HBO Max actually has exclusive rights to streaming of the show, getting each episode a day after they air on Comedy Central.
Followers of the show will remember the last and only film, thus far, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut – a cult-favourite of die-hard fans – which unbelievably came out way back in 1999.
Since then, there have been two games on console and PC – Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole (yes, it’s intentional) – as well as mobile game, but the team still haven’t revisited the world of feature-length films this century.
We, for one, are excited at the prospect of as many as 14 new movies, if not more, especially considering Viacom/Paramount are keen to introduce new characters and ideas on how to evolve the show – something Stone and Parker have always been good at.
South Park till 2027 and beyond!
