Numbers don’t lie.
After the internet went into a frenzy last weekend when it was announced that the Spice Girls would be reuniting, the frenzy has translated into some colossal streaming figures.
On the day Emma Bunton uploaded the photo of the girls reunited for the first time, global music streaming service Deezer saw streams of classic Spice Girl songs such as “Wannabe”, “2 Become 1” and “Viva Forever” rocket by up to 135% in the UK.
Fans across the the country were feeling so nostalgic that streams of “Spice Up Your Life” also saw a 135%, compared to the weekend before, while “Stop” saw a 111% increase.
With their first single, “Wannabe”, released in 1996, the majority of the plays are coming from those aged 26-35, who would have been between 5 and 14-years-old when the Spice Girls arrived on the scene and took over pop culture as we knew it.
However 10% of Spice Girl streamers are 18-year- old – the generation that would have only just been born the year the group’s last album, Forever, was released in 2000.
