It’s a banger tbf

In only the second most important music news story of the day, fans of the tv cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants have signed a petition to play the song ‘Sweet Victory’ during this year’s Super Bowl halftime performance to honour the creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg, who died in November last year.

The petition, started by Israel Colunga on Change.org, has over 1,181,000 signatures and counting. It reads:

Problem
As some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg—the creator of Spongebob Sqaurepants—has passed away recently. As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show.

Solution
Perform Sweet Victory at the Halftime Show

For those unaware of the song in question, ‘Sweet Victory’ is actually performed by SpongeBob, Patrick, Plankton and co. at halftime during the ‘Bubble Bowl’ in the episode Band Geeks.

Oh, and it is a bit of a banger, an anthemic 80s power ballad that reduces the audience to a collective lighter-waving, bro-hugging, tear-crying mess.

Will the same thing happen at this year’s Super Bowl LIII if ‘Sweet Victoy’ is blasted from the PA system at half-time? Well, if the million plus people who are demanding for its airing midway through Rams – Patriots get their way, hopefully, we’ll find out.

There is a slight hitch in the fact that Maroon 5 are already set to perform but, let’s be honest, they haven’t done anything good since Songs About Jane. Fuck Maroon 5 off, get SpongeBob in. Let’s honour the will of the people. It’s the only way.
