The following post contains spoilers for Netflix’s new Korean ‘battle royale’ hit Squid Game.

Still with us? Great – because series director Hwang Dong-hyuk has some details to share about one of the show’s most talked about (and head-scratching) finale twists.
Throughout its nine-episode arc, Squid Game invites a group of gamblers in need of a quick buck to take part in a series of clandestine kids’ games where the winner gets to take home a fortune.
However there’s a catch – and a bloody one at that. If you fail at one of the games, you’re swiftly removed from play, usually with a gun – making the whole process a gory and nail-biting fight for survival.
Those who have already seen the show will no doubt have been surprised at one of its final sequences which showed our hero Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-Jae) with bright red hair.
Gi-Hung’s change from his usual dark-do left many viewers a little confused.
“Finished Squid Game. Not sure how I feel about the ending. Also super confused why the main character decided to dye his hair red at the end,” Tweeted one fan.
Another added: “Anyways, why did the man in Squid Game have to dye his hair red in the end????? That was confusing and a very odd decision.”
Well during a recent interview with Korean entertainment site Zapzee, Dong-hyuk provided some answers:
“I thought about this intuitively,” explained the director, adding: “thinking about how Gi Hun should change his hair in a hair salon. I imagined being him and thought to myself, ‘what is the colour that you would never choose to dye your hair?’
“Then I came to the conclusion that Gi Hun would never dye his hair red. It would be the craziest thing for him to do. So I chose the colour and I thought it really showed his inner anger.”
