Star Wars is back with full force, stronger than ever in fact.
Just 20 days after its release in US cinemas, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ overtook ‘Avatar’ to become the highest grossing movie in American history.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the seventh episode of the Star Wars franchise surpassed $769.5 million (£526.2 million) in domestic box-office sales – the record previously held my James Cameron’s 2009 epic.
The Force Awakens still has a long way to go to beat Avatar’s worldwide record of $2.78 billion (£1.9 billion). It currently boasts a global tally of $1.56 billion (£1.07 billion) – but is yet to open in the lucrative Chinese market.
