It’s a great day for a night in
The weekend is among us. As such, why not kick back on the sofa with one of these fine films on TV this evening.
Superbad – Dave – 9pm
This now iconic Seth Rogen scripted coming-of-age comedy centres on two inseparable teens (Jonah Hill and Michael Cera) about to graduate high school and go off to different colleges who get up to shenanigans.
Forrest Gump – Sky One – 9pm
This 1994 Best Picture winner at the Oscars depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a kindhearted man who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th-century United States.
Raiders of the Lost Ark – Film Four – 9pm
The first entry in what would become the legendary Indiana Jones franchise, this adventure film sees Harrison Ford’s famous archaeologist and adventurer hired by the US government in 1936 to find the Ark of the Covenant before Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.
The Gauntlet – ITV 4 – 9pm
Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this awesome 1977 action-thriller about a down-and-out cop who falls in love with a prostitute (Sondra Locke) who he has been assigned to escort from Las Vegas to Phoenix in order for her to testify against the mob.
1984 – TG4 – 9.20pm
The great John Hurt stars in this handsome and appropriately unsettling adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian sci-fi novel that actually came out in, you guessed it, 1984.
Seven – Turner Classic Movies – 10.55pm
Directed by David Fincher, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman play detectives hunting down a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as a motif in his murders.
Alongside The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is one of the darkest thrillers ever put out by Hollywood and boasts an unforgettable ending.
Come to Daddy – Film Four – 11.15pm
Sadly not given the hype it deserves, this entertaining and surprising black comedy thriller sees Lord of the Rings’ Elijah Wood play a hipster in his 30s who travels to a remote cabin to reconnect with his estranged father.
This is one of those cases where it’s best to know as little about the plot as possible. We’ll just say, things get weird.
