The word-of-mouth hit has hit the big time
Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek was the big winner at the 2020 Emmy Awards.
The show swept the board, winning all four acting awards in the comedy category, as well the writing, directing and best show prizes.
It picked up with both the main comedy acting awards, with Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara winning the Best Comedy Actor and Actress awards respectively. Eugene Levy’s son Daniel also received the Best Supporting Comedy Actor prize.
It was one of three awards won by Daniel Levy, who also got the Best Writing and Best Directing in A Comedy gongs.
Schitt’s Creek won the overall Best Comedy Series award, and Annie Murphy won Best Supporting Actress in a comedy.
It cements Schitt’s Creek position as one of the most acclaimed comedies of recent times. The Canadian show was broadcast on CBC in its homeland and POP TV in the US, but like many modern-day TV hits, it really became a phenomenon when it started streaming on Netflix.
The follows the formerly-rich Rose family, who are forced to relocate to the titular Schitt’s Creek, a small town that is their only remaining asset after being tricked out of their fortune.
Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara play the heads of the Rose family, with Dan Levy and Annie Murphy playing their grown-up children.
The show came to a close this year with its sixth season. If you missed out though, it is all on Netflix for you to catch up with.
Other big winners at the 2020 Emmy Awards included Watchmen and Succession.
Watchmen won Best Limited Series, with Regina king also picking up Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series for starring in the HBO sequel to the cult comic book.
Succession won Best Drama Series, Jeremy Strong won Best Actor in a Drama, beating his on-screen dad, Brian Cox, and the show’s British creator Jesse Armstrong won for Best Writing.
