It’s not what you think
Justin Roiland is not one to hold back when it comes to dark themes in comedy. As the co-creator of Rick & Morty he’s gotten plenty of humour from mixing colourful creations with shocking moments (just look at the fate of Mr Poopybutthole, or the reveal of King Jellybean). And his new show Solar Opposites, about a family of aliens trying to adapt to life on Earth, definitely doesn’t skimp on the casual ultraviolence either.
Solar Opposites makes its UK debut on Star on Disney+ this week, and we caught up with Roiland to talk about the show. And in particular, we asked him if he thinks he has ever gone too far in a cartoon.
His answer? It wasn’t anything from Rick & Morty or Solar Opposites. He instead picked his short contribution to the Netflix comedy special Seth Rogen’s Hilarity For Charity.
The brief clip is essentially a one-joke skit. But it a good joke, and also one so shocking that Roiland was too embarrassed to explain on camera.

The official synopsis for the show reads:
Co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty) and Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty), “Solar Opposites” centres around a team of four aliens who escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Justin Roiland) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans and all their TV, junk food and fun stuff. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.
