Zara McDermott says she was scared of victim-shaming

Zara McDermott has spoken out after reports claimed her Strictly Come Dancing partner Graziano Di Prima kicked and hit her in rehearsals.

McDermott confirmed the reports were true in an emotional statement this morning.

The reality star explained that she was hesitant to come forward about the abuse because she was scared of victim-shaming.

She was also worried about how the allegations would impact her future.

In a statement on Instagram, Zara said her experience on Strictly was magical but her experience inside the training room was different.

“The culture within our society makes it difficult for people to speak up”

“Reports have been made about my treatment on the show and there were witnesses to some events, as well as videos of particular incidents which are incredibly distressing to watch.

“I have wrestled with the fear of opening up – I was scared about public backlash. I was scared about my future and victim-shaming.

“But after a lot of conversations with those I love, I’ve gained the strength to face these fears, and when I asked to speak to the BBC, I spoke candidly about my time on the show.”

Zara said our society’s culture makes it incredibly hard for victims to speak up.

“The culture within our society makes it difficult for people to speak up, especially in a world where social media opinions and voices are so loud.”

Zara concluded her statement by thanking the BBC for their support during this distressing time. She thanked them for acting so swiftly once the allegations came to light.

Her statement comes after Graziano Di Prima issued a statement yesterday confirming he has been axed from the BBC show.
