Netflix has added The Cuckoo, the hit Channel 5 series that premiered just last April.
The show centres around a financially strained couple named Nick (Lee Ingleby, Line of Duty) and Jessica (Claire Goose, Unforgotten) who take in mysterious lodger, Sian (Jill Halfpenny, Liar), who soon charms the whole family.
There is more to Sian than meets the eye, however.
The Cuckoo was created by Barunka O’Shaughnessy and Mike Benson (The Teacher) and was directed in its entirety by Brian O’Malley (Let Us Prey).
Following its premiere earlier in the year, the four-parter was a hit with audiences, with its creepy story, gripping performances and beautiful rural setting (the series was shot in Wicklow, Ireland) being singled out for praise.
And now that it is on Netflix, The Cuckoo has gotten a second wind. It is currently No. 2 on the streaming service’s most-watched TV chart in the UK, falling just behind the new season of Outer Banks.
You can read a sample of critic reviews for the thriller show below.
Daily Mail: “Halfpenny, a veteran of EastEnders, [sells] it with conviction — she’s played many soap scenes stranger than this.”
i: “Channel 5’s slick family thriller hooks from the start with expert pacing and tantalising clues.”
Real Mockery: “Choked full of suspense.”
The Cuckoo is streaming in its entirety on Netflix in the UK and Ireland right now.
