It looks really good.
Good work will always find its audience but when The Handmaid’s Tale was released, you couldn’t help but think that the socio-political climate helped its popularity.
After all, it doesn’t require the biggest leap of faith to see the similarities between Gilead and our own world because the idea of a totalitarian and fascist society emerging from the dying embers of the United States was oddly pertinent in 2017.
Ok, what’s the show about?
Faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate, fertile women are treated as the property of the state and are subjected to heinous sexual abuse and torture.
One of these women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss), is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in. In this horrific society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
Since being released, the dystopian drama has really resonated with audiences and critics alike. The show won two Golden Globes – Best Drama TV Series and Best Actress in a Drama TV Series for Elisabeth Moss – and right now, it currently holds a rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Without spoiling anything, the first reviews for Season 2 have been released and they’re overwhelmingly positive with particular praise for Elisabeth Moss’ superb performance.
The Hollywood Reporter – “the first six episodes of the new season are very, very good, something nobody could have taken for granted with Miller (screenwriter) and company moving farther and farther from Atwood’s source material.”
Variety – “The drama’s creative team knew that when they made the Emmy-winning first season, but “The Handmaid’s Tale” takes even more advantage of her (Moss’) bountiful skills this time out.
USA Today – “Handmaid’s big improvement over the excellent first season is that it more seamlessly toggles between scenes with Offred and the rest of the characters”
Den of Geek – “It updates the commentary of its source material to our 2018 context, which only raises the show’s sense of immediate urgency as well as its penchant for instilling existential dread.”
