Sweep the leg!

In 1984, the original Karate Kid taught us that fear, pain and defeat does not exist in the Cobra Kai dojo but despite a relatively ‘passable’ modern day version of The Karate Kid which starred Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, the original cast are refusing to bow down to the modern generation.

Yes, that’s right Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) are returning as their duel spills over into a new 10-episode series on YouTube Red.

The new series is going to be called Cobra Kai and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s going  to “revolve around a down-and-out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita).”

The creative team behind Hot Tub Time Machine and the Harold and Kumar films are writing the script and according to Josh Heald, one of the scriptwriters, the series will be “a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.”

If you’re worried about your nostalgic love of the original being tarnished then know this, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and AMC all entered a bidding war for Cobra Kai which the subscription service YouTube Red has won.

Still though, what do fans of The Karate Kid think about this?

Wax on, wax off?
