The original was a massive hit for Netflix.
The Platform, one of Netflix’s best and biggest original thrillers ever, is getting a sequel set for a release later this year.
Hailing from Spain, the 2019 movie tells the story of a man named Goreng (Iván Massagué) who one day wakes up in a tower-style holding facility known as ‘the pit’.
Consisting of many levels, his cellmate, Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor), explains that food is delivered to the inhabitants of each floor via a platform from the top floor down to the bottom floor – pausing for a fixed period of time on each level so folks can eat.
Complicating matters is that people on the lower levels can only eat what is left over from those above them.
“And anyone caught stowing food? They’re killed. Every month, people are randomly assigned a new level,” the plot synopsis adds.
Earning acclaim for its darkly compelling premise and its societal commentary, The Platform was also a major hit for Netflix when it premiered on the streaming service in 2020.
Watched by 56 million households over its first four weeks of release, it is currently the fifth most popular non-English film in Netflix’s history.
As such, we now have a teaser trailer for The Platform 2 which will see director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia returning.
The plot synopsis for the follow-up reads: “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system.
“But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”
Starring newcomers to the franchise Milena Smit (Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers) and Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), The Platform 2 comes to Netflix on 4 October 2024.
