The reason why Joe Lycett went to the Baftas dressed as Elizabeth I

Not an ideal outfit choice for the hottest day of the year

There are always some bold and stylish looks on the red carpet at awards shows, but it’s safe to say that no one else looked like Joe Lycett at the 2024 Bafta TV Awards.

One of the biggest nights in the television calendar took place on Sunday (May 13), with shows such as Top Boy and Happy Valley being the big winners on the nights.

The great and the good of British television gathered at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with the likes of David Tennant, Hannah Waddingham, Ant and Dec and Brian Cox gracing the red carpet.

But there can be little doubt about who stood out the most ahead of the show – Joe Lycett.

The comedian stole the show thanks to his Tudor-style dress and dyed red hair. Unfortunately for Lycett – who picked up the award for Entertainment Performance on the night for his show Late Night Lycett – this came on the hottest day of the year so far, so he did carry both manual and battery-powered fans with him.

There was a reason why he had gone to the Baftas dressed as he was though.

Lycett had made a bet with his aunties Margaret and Pauline that if they managed to get 200,000 Instagram followers then he would go to the event dressed as Elizabeth I.

Sure enough, Margaret and Pauline reached the target, so Lycett had to pick out his finest ruff for the red carpet.

Collecting his award on the night, he said: “I lost a bet, I’m so hot and I need a piss.”

He then joked: “Thanks to my mum and dad, Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII.”
