The Rock and Will Ferrell are producing a pro-wrestling comedy for TV

This has got 'TV gold' written all over it...

After the absolute shitter of a year we’ve all had, this might be the news we’ve been waiting all 2016 for.

The Rock is Hollywood’s most in-demand star right now and Will Ferrell is the funniest bastard on the planet, so the prospect of them working together is a tantalising one.

So, we’re stoked to hear the WWE legend and the comic actor are teaming up to create a pro-wrestling comedy for American TV.

The sit-com takes its inspiration from the crazy early years of The Rock’s wrestling career and the real life experiences he had with former WWE head writer Brian Gewirtz, according to Variety.

The comedy series is based on all the daft stuff that happens behind the scenes at a wrestling promotion and centres on the odd-couple relationship between a hot-shot rising star (like The Rock) and a cringingly awkward comedy writer who is coming to wrestling for the first time.

Even before a pilot has been made, you can tell this fish-out-of-water comedy of a nerdy writer and a load of uber-masculine wrestler is going to be a hit.

Anything The Rock touches at the moment turns to gold.

“This November will mark the 20th anniversary of my professional wrestling debut,” he said. “I was 24 years old, putting in the hard work, making $40 bucks per match and had no clue of the long journey that lay ahead of me with characters and backstage stories so colourful you’d think there’s no way that can be true.

“The entertaining show that goes on in front of the crowd pales in comparison to the insanely entertaining show that goes on backstage. Brian and myself can’t wait to tell our stories.”

Gewirtz added: “Coming from Hollywood to the wrestling industry, with its intense backstage atmosphere and larger than life personalities, was a major culture shock.

“After working in the business for over 15 years, Dwayne and I had encounters and experiences that were unbelievable as well as unforgettable. We can’t wait to bring this project to the fans.”

The project is a collaboration between Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions and a pilot will be made for Fox.

You know it’s going to be TV gold.
