The superb Oasis documentary Supersonic could be getting a sequel

Paul Moore

“You can have it all but how much do you want it?”

In terms of the best films that were released in 2016, Mat Whitecross’ superb documentary that charted the rise and rise and rise of Oasis was one of the year’s best.

To be honest, you don’t even need to be a fan of Oasis to appreciate Supersonic because the whole experience was like a nostalgia-filled trip through the Britpop years with the Gallagher brothers as your tour guide.

While the music was undoubtedly the main draw – the scene with Liam recording the vocals for Champagne Supernova is worth the admission fee alone – there were also plenty of moments that were genuinely hilarious.

Who can forget Alan McGee’s initial response after hearing the news that the lads were chucked off the ferry en route to Amsterdam, Noel Gallagher moment of inspiration on Supersonic or the band’s utterly shambolic performance at Whisky A Go-Go when they did “big f**king lines of crystal meth” before performing on stage.

We’re delighted to see that Supersonic won the award for Best Documentary at the Empire Awards, and while accepting the award, director Mat Whitecross revealed that he’s not exactly done with the story of Oasis.

During his acceptance speech, Whitecross said: “Liam and Noel Gallagher were really generous. Everything we asked for they gave us.”

He continued : “Liam said he wants to make a sequel. I don’t know if he was joking or not. Actually, after we cut at Knebworth, Liam and Noel both actually said they wanted to carry on.”

Given the fact that Liam and Noel recorded their audio for the documentary in separate slots, we could definitely see a sequel that would probably chart the cocaine haze that engulfed the recording of Be Here Now and the inevitable breakup of the band at Rock en Seine in Paris.

It’s probably a good thing that the Gallagher brothers are kept apart, especially after Liam’s most recent tweets about his new album and older brother.

Still though, if both men are happy to keep on telling the story of Oasis, we’re definitely on board.  Whitecross has already proven himself to be an extremely talented filmmaker and there’s still so much footage of Oasis that can be used.

Mad for it.
