Top Gun 2 has its director, release date and plot details

Paul Moore

We feel the need for speed.

To be honest, a large part of us really want Top Gun: Maverick to be a cross-over movie where Topper Harley from Hot Shots takes on Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in an epic aerial duel. Somehow, we don’t see that happening.

Given the fact that The Mummy saw Tom Cruise register his biggest offshore and global openings ever, it’s clear that global audiences haven’t lost that lovin’ feeling for the world’s biggest star and with official confirmation that a Top Gun sequel is happening, the attention now switches to the fine details.

Deadline are reporting that Maverick – and those magnificent aviators – will be back on our screens on July 12th, 2019. Given the tragic passing of Tony Scott, the sequel will now be helmed by the director of Tron: Legacy, Joseph Kosinski.

Kosinski previously directed Cruise on their sci-fi effort Oblivion.

Peter Craig (The Town), Justin Marks (live-action Jungle Book), and Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz (Fringe, X-Men: First Class) are on script duties.

All we ask is that they manage to write dialogues that’s as good as “Son, your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash,” or “take me to bed or lose me forever.”

Regarding the plot, it appears that the new adventure will see Maverick return as a flight instructor in the Fighter Weapons School. His task is to train and lead a new class of fighter pilots.

Somehow, we don’t see Cruise staying grounded for long. We wonder who his new wingman will be?

They need to get Ice Man back on board.
