Netflix’s occult thriller Apostle could be the best thing they’ve ever done

Paul Moore

From the director of The Raid films. This looks incredible.

There are some films that you feel compelled to recommend to every single person that you meet. For this author, The Raid is one of those films.

We firmly believe that it’s the greatest action film since The Matrix – sorry John Wick, please don’t kill us with a pencil – and if that wasn’t enough, Gareth Evans, the director of The Raid, is also responsible for the absolutely bonkers short film, Safe Haven.

Guess what? We absolutely loved that feature too.

In his new film, Apostle, the Welsh director is teaming up with Dan Stevens.

Ok, what’s it about?

Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult.

Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives under the leadership of the charismatic Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen). As Thomas infiltrates the island’s community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult’s ranks nonetheless – and uncovers a secret far eviler than he could have imagined.

Apostle is a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.

After seeing the first trailer, we’re absolutely pumped because there’s a real vibe of The Wicker Man meets Saw. There’s also elements of Big Trouble in Little China thrown in for good measure and that’s never a bad thing.

Lucy Boynton, Bill Millner, and Kristine Froseth also star in this demonic thriller.

12 October can’t come around soon enough.
