He picked up a Best Actor Oscar for his role in the modern classic.
Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 6 July) is the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, one of Denzel Washington’s very best films.
It centres around rookie cop Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) as he spends his first day as a Los Angeles narcotics officer.
On this day, he is paired with a rogue detective named Alonzo Harris (Washington) who isn’t what he first appears to be.
Thanks to Denzel Washington’s charismatic, commanding but scary central performance, as well as the taut direction by Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer trilogy) and the twisty quotable screenplay by David Ayer (Fury), Training Day is now considered a modern classic.
Upon release, Hawke and Washington were even nominated for Oscars – with the latter winning in the Best Actor category.
Training Day is airing on BBC One at 11.35pm. It is also available to rent on Apple, Google Play, Microsoft, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
