While films like Get Out, Don’t Breathe, It Follows and Green Room are proof that Hollywood still remembers how to craft an excellent horror film, there’s no denying that over the last decade, some of the best work in the genre has come from abroad.
The Orphanage and REC (Spain), Kill List (U.K), Let the Right One In (Sweden) , Goodnight Mommy (Austria), I Saw the Devil (South Korea) and countless others are testament to this, but there are two other excellent horror films that you really should see on Netflix.
In case you’re wondering, they’ve scored 98% and 99% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively.
In the unnerving, tense and eerie horror Under the Shadow, it’s clear that the filmmaker has adhered to one of the golden rules in horror, there are far more terrifying things than what you see on screen.
The film is set amid the chaos of the Iran-Iraq war, a period known as The War of the Cities. Accused of subversion by the post-Revolution government and blacklisted from her college, Shideh (Narges Rashidi) falls into a state of paranoia.
Soon after her husband leaves to fight in the conflict, a missile hits their apartment but thankfully for those inside, it doesn’t explode? Still, when their neighbor dies under mysterious circumstances, things slowly begin to unravel.
What is this malevolent evil that suddenly begins to haunt their home?
What unfolds is an unsettling, creepy and haunting horror which Empire described as “a quality ghost story with an unusual backdrop and great performances.”
Under the Shadow currently has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it’s worth checking out. Still, if you prefer something that’s very different…

Don’t let the running time of this South Korean epic perturb you, it’s a superb example of a filmmaker that’s in total control of his craft. Hell, 99% on Rotten Tomatoes from 71 reviews doesn’t lie.
Ok, what’s it about?
The arrival of a mysterious stranger in a quiet rural village causes suspicion amongst the villagers- but as they begin killing each other for no apparent reason, that suspicion turns to panic. When the daughter of the investigating officer falls under the same savage spell, he calls in a shaman to assist in finding the culprit.
Demonic possessions, exorcisms, murder and a story that – as The Guardian state – “takes fear to the brink of an abyss” are all on offer here.
