Let’s cut to the chase: will Spider-Ham be returning?
Sony Pictures has shared our first-glimpse at the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s animated epic Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – and it’s a two-parter.
Helmed by directors Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman and co-written by Phil Lord, Into The Spider-Verse introduced us to Brooklyn’s Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) who becomes Spider-Man after a freak accident before stumbling on a multi-verse containing multiple different spider-men.
Through a colouful retelling of the classic Spider-Man story we meet an array of alternate-realty web-heads, including Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacey’s Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld) and even a pig-shaped hero named Spider-Ham aka Peter Porker (John Mulaney).
Hailed by critics and fans for its sleek computer-animated style and bold creative choices, its multi-verse themes have gone on to be adopted by Marvel’s primary Spider-Man universe – due to be glimpsed later this month in Spider-Man: No Where Home.
Avid spider-fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a follow up and today, Sony Animation in association with the team at Marvel provided exactly that – with the news that a two-part sequel will drop in October 2022.
As if that wasn’t enough to make you web your pants, they also released the first scene from Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One). Watch it for yourself below:
Next year’s sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson working from a new script that’s been written by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scriptwriter David Callaham alongside The Lego Movie‘s Lord and Chris Miller.
Moore and Steinfeld also return as Morales and Stacy, with star Issa Rae joining the fold as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman.
According to part-one’s official synopsis, “Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”
Sounds cool.
Meanwhile, Marvel director Jon Watts is gearing up to explore his own multi-verse, pitting Tom Holland’s current live-action Spider-Man against a range of familiar faces from the franchise’s storied past.
Villains confirmed to make an appearance in the sequel include Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock from director Sam Raimi’s Tobey Maguire-fronted trilogy – and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from filmmaker Marc Webb’s Andrew Garfield-shaped The Amazing Spider-Man and its subsequent sequel.
We’re yet to lean whether Maguire and Garfield will be returning to their iconic blue and red spandex – but with the film released on December 15, we don’t have long to wait before we find out.
