17 US Election songs for you to listen and weep to

The soundtrack to the impending doom/burying your head in the sand.

Rich Cooper

Are you staying up all night to watch the US Election? What is the matter with you?

To ease the pain of staying up so late without being completely rat-arsed (although let’s face it, that’s the best way to deal with the situation), we’ve put this playlist together for you to listen to while the votes come in.

Good luck everybody, and let’s hope we make it to the morning.

Here’s the playlist. The rest is out of our hands now. Not that it was ever in them.

1. F**k You – Cee Lo Green

To no one in particular. Just a big “fuck you” to what has happened, what is happening and what will happen.

2. This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us – Sparks

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

3. Best Of A Bad Situation – Wolfmother

They say it’s the lesser of two evils, but we prefer to think of it as polishing a turd.

4. Psycho Killer – Talking Heads

Who this song is aimed it depends entirely on your political bent. Or, OR, could it be aimed at both of them? Could it? Maybe it could.

5. The Joke’s On Us – Biffy Clyro

Because at the end of the day, whoever wins, we lose. Yes, that is an Alien vs. Predator reference.

6. My Sweet Lord – George Harrison

You know you’re going to find yourself muttering this at some point tonight, so why not have it in a lovely song instead?

7. How Did It Come To This – Take That

You didn’t think it would be Take That who’d sum up the situation so perfectly, yet here we are.

8. I’m So Tired – The Beatles

We’re not going to know the result until around 5am GMT, so if you’re going all night with this, rest assured that The Beatles know how you feel.

9. Apocalypse Please – Muse

Please, just end it all now.

10. It’s the End of the World As We Know It – R.E.M.

“And I feel fine,” sings Michael Stipe. Let’s see how you’re doing on November 9, eh Stipey?

11. Raining Blood – Slayer

When the sky turns red, that’s when you know hell has been unleashed/the winner has been decided.

12. I Believe In A Thing Called Love – The Darkness

We all need to believe in love, yeah? Because love’s the only thing that’s gonna get us through this mess isn’t it, yeah? On the other hand, guitar solos are cool. Who needs elections when you’ve got guitar solos, eh?

13. Party In The USA – Miley Cyrus

This works as both a victory song and a bitterly ironic encapsulation of how you’re not feeling, depending on how it goes.

14. Electioneering – Radiohead

It’s bound to get conspiritorial at some point, so if you want to intellectualise the downfall/rise of your favourite/least favourite candidate, this is the song to do it to.

15. Peaches – The Presidents of the United States of America

Nothing else to do but move to the country and eat peaches.

16. Tuesday’s Gone – Lynyrd Skynyrd

It’s not the only thing that’s gone after this election.

17. Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life – Monty Python

If you’re going down, go down singing. Or swinging. See if the wife is up for it first, though.
