Second season of hit series earning Last of Us comparisons streaming now

Stephen Porzio

The show has already been renewed for a third season.

A post-apocalyptic series that has earned strong comparisons to The Last of Us is now back for its second season.

Available to watch via NOW Entertainment and Sky Max, that show is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, a spin-off of the hit zombie drama series The Walking Dead which focuses around the character of Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus).

The plot synopsis from Sky for the first season of the show reads:

“The series finds fan favourite Daryl Dixon washing up on the shores of France, having been kidnapped from America for unknown reasons. After managing to escape the ship he was brought onto, Daryl finds himself in the country that’s home to the source of the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse. Now he needs to figure out a way to get home.

“Encountering paramilitary group Pouvoir des Vivants (Power of the Living) and a friendly nun from Union de L’Espoir (Union of Hope) along the way, Daryl needs to keep his wits about him if he ever has a chance to make it back to America. This is made even worse by the evolved Walkers he encounters – including a variant that spits acid called ‘burners’.

“But as time goes on, the self-styled loner quickly finds himself reluctantly attached to the new people in his life – but there are also people from his past wanting to find him.”

Co-starring Adam Nagaitis (The Terror) and Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter), Daryl Dixon’s six-part first season earned for the most part positive reviews from critics – with many calling it the best Walking Dead programme in years.

Its story – which finds Dixon tasked with delivering a young child (played Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) seen as humanity’s last hope to safety – has also earned plenty of comparisons to the acclaimed The Last of Us video game and its subsequent beloved TV adaptation.

The Walking Dead spin-off was such a success in fact, that it was quickly renewed for a second and third season.

That second season – subtitled The Book of Carol and which sees Walking Dead fan favourite character Carol Peletier (Mellisa McBride) join the main cast – has just premiered.

It has also earned positive reviews, a sample of which you can read right here:

ComicBook.com: “Together or apart, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride are a tour de force in the exhilarating new season.”

Decider: “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon continues to work because it puts one of the franchise’s best characters in an unfamiliar situation.”

IGN Movies: “The Book of Carol, despite the story’s occasionally clunky reshaping, is still a potent, poignant reunion between two Walking Dead favorites. The action is great, the seasonal resolution works, and the final sequence offers clever catharsis.”

Radio Times: “With Carol’s return also returns some of the issues that made the original Walking Dead tough to endure. Still, it’s undeniably thrilling to see Daryl and Carol back together again, to see this spin-off become the show it was always supposed to be.”

The first episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season two is now available to watch in the UK and Ireland via NOW Entertainment and Sky Max, with the rest of its six episodes dropping weekly on Fridays.

Its first season is also currently streaming through NOW and Sky.
