Emma Stone’s reaction to one gag was excellent
While most viewers will be aware of Andy Samberg from his sublime comedy Hot Rod (hey, we love Brooklyn Nine-Nine as much as anyone else but Hot Rod is awesome), the talented comedian was the centre of attention as he co-hosted the Golden Globes with Killing Eve star, Sandra Oh.
As you may know, the Golden Globes are somewhat riskier than the Oscars when it comes to their content and speeches – it must be the fact that unlike the Academy Awards, the drink is flowing throughout – and a standout moment of the evening is always the opening monologue as celebrities get roasted and laughed at.
Think about some of the memorable moments down the years as the likes of Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon have all roasted some of Hollywood’s most famous faces.
Well, this year saw the two hosts take a very different approach as they pursued the idea of ‘killing them with kindness.’
On social media, many viewers felt Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg gave those in attendance an easy ride in comparison to previous hosts.
This being said, there were still some laughs in their opening monologue as they addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the hosting of the Oscars.
“We are going to have some fun, give out some awards, and one lucky audience member will host the Oscars!” they said at the very start.
One of the best gags of the night was from Emma Stone after Oh joked: “Crazy Rich Asians is the first studio film with an Asian-American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha.”
As you may know, the actress was referring to two recent films – starring Scarlett Johansson and Emma Stone respectively – that were criticised for whitewashing because they cast white actresses in Asian roles.
At this point, Emma Stone interjected with a very loud “I’m sorry!”

You can see the whole thing below but some viewers felt that those in the room got off a bit too lightly.
Granted, Oh and Samberg poked some fun at Lady Gaga, Black Panther, and Jim Carrey (a standout moment), but some people felt that the opening monologue fell a little bit flat.

When you declare all comedy offensive what you get is this brutally boring #GoldenGlobes opening monologue by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh.

The opening monologue for the #GoldenGlobes is very cringe worthy. None of that was funny.

This being said, some viewers really liked the fact that the opening speech went against the norm and included a more positive social message.
On that note, Sandra Oh’s closing remarks struck a chord with some people.
What do you reckon?

The opening monologue to the #GoldenGlobeAwards was funny & refreshing with no politics for once at a #Hollywood award show ! So fun! Great start to the show! -s
