Could this Simpsons character be leaving the show?
A new documentary called The Problem with Apu is taking a look at the longtime character, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, and how he portrays Indian immigrants in the US.
The documentary focuses on the exploitation of Indian culture and how the portrayal has led to increasing stereotypes of Indian immigrants.
However, the documentary has received such support that it is being reported that the makers of The Simpsons have been reassessing the character.
Speaking to TMZ, longtime voiceover artist on the show, Hank Azaria, responded to criticisms that the character is racist, saying:
“I think the documentary made some really interesting points and gave us a lot to think about, and we really are,” he told reporters.
“To hear that anybody that was hurt and offended by any character or vocal performance is really upsetting, that it was offensive or hurtful to anybody.
“It’s an important conversation that we’re definitely having. It’s a lot to digest.”
Azaria’s comments have now led to reports that Apu’s character may be leaving the show after increasing pressure from viewers.
Apu’s character first appeared on the show back in 1990.
