Finally, it’s making a welcomed return.
Anyone who grew up in the ’90s will remember The Crystal Maze. It was a Channel 4 show that became part of the Saturday evening TV schedule in a lot of houses.
The show was broadcast originally from 1990 to 1995 for five series, and was shown as repeats after that. It consisted of a giant course, broken down into four zones: Aztec, Futuristic, Medieval and Industrial. They all had tasks, both physical and mental, which groups of contestants had to complete.
Once you finished a task you were awarded a small crystal which would allow you 5 seconds in the crystal dome. Within that, you had to jump around collecting gold tokens and avoiding silver ones. At the very end, the amount of gold tokens you had would determine if you won the overall prize of a small replica Crystal Maze Dome.
It was by far the most sought after TV show prize at the time. And now it’s coming back as part of Channel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer, with David Tennant rumoured to be the new host.
A TV insider told The Sun, “Even two decades after it last aired, there are very few shows that have been as magical and action-packed as The Crystal Maze. It is still remembered extremely fondly today.”
They added, “Channel 4 are hoping to tap into that nostalgia and believe viewers will jump at the chance to finally take on the show’s adventurous challenges themselves.”
Here is what you can expect from the new show:
