Viewer reaction to the last Game of Thrones has been mixed to say the least, but we can at least take solace in the fact the show is coming to an end, giving us the closure we’ve so long lusted over: even if that closure leaves us screwing up our fists and shouting at the TV.

The ending in particular, which saw Arya Stark discovering a white horse in the rubble of Kings Landing and riding it to safety has received a mixed response from fans on social media.

But, of course, while you can doubt the realism of the event itself, it’s fair to say the scene was laden with symbology, and almost certainly served as a set up for how the coming episode would unfold. Although, you may not have understood it unless you’re versed in the Good Book.

Users online have pointed out that the moment at the end of the episode resembled a particular passage of the Bible about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Revelation 6:8 predicts that Death itself will ride a pale horse.

The full verse reads: “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.”

Given that Arya has been linked with death throughout her tenure on the show, from the death list which has served as motivation for all that she has done on the show, to her time with the faceless men and her killing of the Night King earlier in this season.

Setting her up as the embodiment of ‘death’ would only add to the theory that it is her destiny to kill Daenerys, which has also been foreshadowed in a prophecy that Melisandre told Arya back in season three.

“I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me: brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you’ll shut forever,” the Red Woman told Arya.

It had long been assumed the green eyes in question referred to Cersei, however, as she died in the last episode, it now means that Dany is the likely candidate. Although, to state the obvious, we’ll need to wait for the final episode to know for sure.
