They were the stars of cult classic buddy comedy movie, Step Brothers, and now Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are linking up once again to play one of the most iconic duos in history: detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. John Watson.
Considering their obvious on-screen chemistry and mutual love of activities, it may surprise people to learn that Holmes and Watson will be only the third film that Ferrell and Reilly have co-starred in, after the aforementioned Step Brothers and 2006’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.Â
It’s fair to say that Baker Street is pretty crowded these days. The popular Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman TV adaptation is returning for its fourth series next year, and the third instalment of Guy Ritchie’s Hollywood take on series with Robert Downey Jr, is reportedly entering production soon.
But it appears we haven’t yet reached saturation point in the Sherlock universe, and Ferrell and Reilly will certainly add something different to what’s already out there.
According to Deadline, 49-year-old Ferrell was originally going to double up with Sacha Baron Cohen, who played his arch nemesis, Jean Girard, in Talladega Nights. That apparently stalled, but the producers have worked quickly to revive the project and Sony plan to start production this year.
Deadline report that Get Hard‘s Etan Cohen will be on director duty.
And while we’re talking Sherlock, you may as well re-watch that chilling teaser trailer for the upcoming series. 2017 can’t come soon enough.
