Netflix confirm You is returning for a third season

Wil Jones

What name will Joe / Will go under this time?

Netflix’s supremely successful stalker show You is to return for a third season, the streaming giant has confirmed.

It’s quite an achievement for the psychological thriller – You was originally commissioned by US cable channel Lifetime, but failed to find an audience. It was only when it was put on to Netflix that it suddenly became a phenomenon. Despite being notoriously elusive with their audience figures, they confirmed that 40 million people streamed the first season, and became enraptured with the exploits of creepy Joe and his obsession with NYU student Beck.

The second series hit Netflix on Boxing Day, ideal for binging in that space between Christmas and New Year when you have no idea what day or time it is. Joe, now going by the name Will, had now relocated to LA, but quickly slips back into his old patterns when he meets chef Love.

Netflix announced that You would be returning with a typically flippant series of tweets

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 FROM HERE ON

After moving into a leafy suburb with Love, the third season will focus on his next obsession, the woman next door, as shown by the closing scene of season 2. But this is unlikely to be a love interest. There are already theories circulating that the unsuspecting woman could be his mother, whom we saw a lot of in the numerous flashbacks that painted a picture of Joe’s traumatic upbringing in season 2.

But whatever happens, don’t expect things to run smoothly. Speaking to TV Line, Badgley hinted at what is coming next for Joe and Love. “They’re not soulmates. He’s afraid of her at the end. Basically, it’s set up for Season three in a way where they would be each other’s arch nemesis.”

Season three is expected to arrive in 2021.
