Don’t Look Up is becoming a reality and it’s pretty terrifying
A NASA scientist gave a stark warning to the public before being arrested, stating that we are heading towards a “f***ing catastrophe” if we don’t start listening to scientists about climate change.
Peter Kalmus, a data scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and an associate project scientist at UCLA’s Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science & Engineering, made the plea outside the Los Angeles branch of JP Morgan Chase Bank earlier this year.
He was one of over 1,000 scientists in 25 different countries who risked being arrested on April 6 to share their warning.

Standing in his lab coat outside the bank’s building with engineer Eric Gill, an emotional Kalmus explained: “I’m here because scientists are not being listened to. I’m willing to take a risk for this gorgeous planet – for my sons.
“And we’ve been trying to warn you guys for so many decades that we’re heading towards a f***ing catastrophe.
A growing number of scientists are willing to risk arrest in a desperate bid to get leaders to act on the climate crisis. Listen to climate scientist Peter Kalmus @ClimateHuman choke up as he and others at @ScientistRebel1 block an entrance to @Chase in LA today.

“And we end up being ignored – the scientists of the world are being ignored. And it’s got to stop. We’re going to lose everything. And we’re not joking. We’re not lying. We’re not exaggerating.
“This is so bad, everyone – that we’re willing to take this risk. And more and more scientists, and more and more people, are going to start joining us.
“This is for all of the kids of the world, all of the young people, all of the future people. This is so much bigger than any of us.”

The speech shares worrying similarities the 2021 Adam McKay film Don’t Look Up, which is basically an unsaid but massive warning about climate change killing us all. The film follows astronomers played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence who are on a mission to warn mankind about a comet (climate change) that is coming to destroy Earth, but similarly, they are largely ignored.
Kalmus’s real life warning ended with him being arrested for chaining himself to the bank’s door, along with a physicist, an engineer and a science teacher.
The scientist recently explained why he went to such drastic measures to get the public’s attention.
Speaking to outlet AJ+ during a follow up interview published earlier this week, he said: “I’ve been trying other ways to get through to the public for 16 years, and none of it worked. I think it’s worth the risk to our careers to try and wake up the public to what’s happening to our planet.”
Kalmus added: “It was very kind of emotional and I was thinking about my sons and the future of life on Earth.”
