Here’s the top reason men have for skipping the gym

We've all been there...

Ben Kenyon

Skipped that Monday morning leg session with your mates? You’re not alone.

It might have been a rough weekend and the last thing that you want to do is 100 squats when you’re still nursing a hangover. We’ve all done it.

But you might be surprised to find that this isn’t the top excuse British men gave for skipping a gym session.

A survey of 2,000 Brits, carried out by TRAINFitness, found there was a different reason that made blokes swerve one of their weekly sessions.

Almost half of all respondents claimed they had missed a workout because they were too tired to train.

While fatigue meant men missed hitting the gym at least once a week, an equally surprising number said they would forego exercise for work commitments.

The study found that 51.2% would give up going to the gym completely to make more time for work-related activities.

Interestingly, 33% of people blame their unhealthy eating habits on not having enough time to prepare meals due to work. Whereas 18.3% of people blame their home environment and 15.5% blame a bad influence from work colleagues (we’re looking at you Noz who brings ice cream and treats into the office).

It also revealed that more than a third of men said work commitments demotivate them the most when it comes to exercise.

Stats don’t lie – and these statistics showed that the same couldn’t be said for relationships.

While gym-goers were willing to cut back on training for work, having a partner wasn’t going to stop them from working out. Less than one in 10 said they wouldn’t give up hitting the gym even if they were in a comfortable relationship.

There were 13% of men who didn’t go to the gym because they felt intimidated by other gym users, with 25 to 34-year-olds most likely to feel awkward or uneasy.

Despite you being able to get gym memberships for less than a tenner a month in many British towns and cities, 3% of people’s top excuse for not going was that it was too expensive.

That said, this is all the motivation you need to get down that gym and train harder than you’ve ever trained before…
