As CBD is one of the newest supplements around, naturally there is a big list of questions that need answering

What does CBD do to you body? How will CBD benefit you? Who has used it to great effect? Together with Satipharm, we’ve investigated everything you need to know.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid found within the cannabis plant. At least 113 different cannabinoids have been isolated from hemp. Cannabinoids are chemicals found within the hemp plant, one of the most prevalent being CBD.

The history of hemp reaches back at least 5,000 years. As a plant it was used as herbal medicine in ancient China, Rome and Greece. During the reign of King Henry VIII, all farmers in England had to allocate a proportion of their land specifically for the growing of hemp in order to produce rope, sails, nets and other naval equipment

The history of CBD as an identifiable compound dates back to the 1940s. Now, we see CBD being utilised in all manor of products and the benefits of the cannabinoid are being reported daily in the news.

How does it work?

The cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, one of which being CBD, interact with the body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoid system. This is a network of cannabinoid receptors and naturally occurring chemical messengers – the aforementioned endocannabinoids – that play a part in the body’s overall health and wellness.

The two main cannabinoid receptors were found to be CB1 receptors, found in the brain and central nervous system, and CB2 receptors found throughout the rest of the body. The naturally occurring endocannabinoids interact with the body’s cannabinoid receptors, and it is through this process that the ECS regulates a range of bodily functions.

What are the purported benefits of CBD supplements?

There have been very minimal side-effects reported, and research suggests CBD could be much safer than many other supplements used for symptoms such as stress relief.

The World Health Organisation concluded in 2018 that, “to date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD”.

Many athletes such as ultra runner Shane Finn use CBD to minimise the impact of joint pain on athletic performance.

What is the difference between capsules and regular CBD oil?

The key differences between CBD oils and CBD Gelpell® capsules are the way the CBD gets into your body and their bioavailability.

When CBD is delivered through a dropper under the tongue (sublingually), it can be difficult to calculate the dose of CBD within each drop of oil. The bioavailability is how much of the CBD will get into your system. Delivering CBD under the tongue has been shown to have relatively low bioavailability.

Satipharm Gelpell® capsules have been developed specifically for high bioavailability and consistent dosage. This high bioavailability comes from advanced technology within each capsule, making them up to three times stronger than regular oils.
