Ah, come on science – sucking the fun out of everything once again.
We recently found out that Jagerbombs are pretty bad for you and now we learn that our second favourite hobby ~NAPPING~ is also catastrophic for health.
Napping for more than 40 minutes presents an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, according to a University of Tokyo study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 65th Annual Scientific Session and Expo.
Metabolic syndrome manifests as a cluster of conditions such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure, excess abdominal fat, high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels.
All in all, it’s pretty bad news and pretty much increases your likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease.
Great.
But hold up, on the other side of things, feeling sleepy, drowsy or tired also increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by up to 50 per cent.
Tomohide Yamada, lead author of the study, explained:
“Taking naps is widely prevalent around the world. So clarifying the relationship between naps and metabolic disease might offer a new strategy of treatment, especially as metabolic disease has been increasing steadily all over the world.”
Apparently, according to Attn:, the results of this study are far less grim than previous explorations.
One study found that middle-aged and elderly adults who napped during the day were 14 percent more likely to die in a 13-year period than their non-napping peers.
Death by napping doesn’t sound too bad to us right now.
It’s not all bad news though. The study concludes that simply being aware of your tiredness and napping schedule can help. Keep your daytime nap under 40 minutes and all should be well.
Go forth and nap in knowledge.
