This is a very worrying sight.
Over the last few years, the issue of concussion in rugby has been widely discussed as knowledge of the dangers of head-on collisions grow.
But for all the talk of their effects down the line, we often forget the hand-wringing over the Head Injury Assessment protocols and the likes can actually sentence some young players to a life of extended hardship.
Nothing made this clearer than former British and Irish Lions number eight John Beattie’s recent interview with ex-Glasgow Warriors player John Shaw about the issue of dealing with concussions.
When asked what the future holds for him, Shaw attempts to answer before having what he describes as a “cut out moment”, where his mind goes completely blank and he forgets the question entirely.
Shaw says such moments are a frequent occurrence for him.
