The world’s first “tap water bar” has opened. That’s right, tap water.

A new pop-up bar in the US is taking the concept of a “watering hole” to the extreme.

Owners Colin Kloecker and Shanai Matteson want to share their love of water with the world, opening the first ever dedicated tap water bar in Minneapolis, serving “free and local” tap waters.

Originally conceived as a public art project, the what-it-says-on-the-tine Water Bar works in partnerships with non-profit groups and public agencies to teach people about clean drinking water.

On its website, the organisation describes itself as “a creative expression of a whole system and a conduit for the lived experiences of people within that system”. Just what you want in a pub.

If you think serving water exclusively is a little on the cheap side, you might be interested to note that the owners don’t actually pay their staff any wages either. It’s ethical of course, as its website states:

“We’ve also directly engaged over 60 volunteers and interns as Water Bar water tenders. These everyday experts help care for and communicate about water and the ways it shapes and is shaped by human culture.”
