It’s set to be called ‘The Great Imitator’
Nando’s is set to launch a new plant-based chicken substitute for vegetarians to enjoy. This will be the first time the Afro-Portuguese restaurant has ever released a meat substitute.
Previously, the vegan and vegetarian options at Nando’s were limited, with typically only bean burgers and a portobello mushroom fitting the bill. However, Nando’s have upped the ante a little to offer a high protein, veggie-friendly alternative to chicken and beef.
Nando specialises in flame-grilled chicken, with a menu that boasts dishes as diverse as a ten-wing roulette to grilled thighs and a double chicken breast wrap.
Now, they’re set to go one step further with the addition of a plant-based chicken substitute.
There is a catch, however. While it will be suitable for vegetarians, it’s not one for vegans.
The plant-based chicken will be cooked on the same grill as all other chicken, taking it off the menu for any interested vegans out there.

Nando’s say: “It’s our first ever plant-based PERi-PERi chicken alternative, packed full of PERi-PERi, made completely from pea protein and the perfect way to get your meat-free Monday on in true tasty style. You can order it in a burger, pitta or wrap.”
The restaurant says that the main motivation in adding a plant-based meat alternative to their menu is environmental.
“We’ve made some pretty big commitments to fight climate change, and introducing more plant-based options to our menus is just one of the many ways we’re aiming to bring down our carbon emissions. Because when it comes to climate change, we’re not clucking about.”
This isn’t the only environmental menu change Nando’s are delving into. They are also set to switch their mayonnaise for a vegan alternative.
