Pizza for breakfast is ‘healthier’ than most cereals, apparently

The news we have all been waiting for.

Kyle Picknell

THANK YOU SCIENCE.

We have all been there, haven’t we? Waking up with a fuzzy head, not knowing who you are or where you are or what you have done, but knowing that smell.

That familiar smell.

It caresses your nostrils. It lifts your weary psyche. You scan quickly for the source. Panic hits. You can’t locate it through the tip. Your trousers are hanging off the door. Your t-shirt is in the bin for some reason. Then… ah. There it is.

The 16″ meat feast you drunkenly stumbled home with last night, before spilling over into bed like a top-heavy Jenga tower. Crumbs everywhere. Spicy beef everywhere.

There it is, the box, the holy grail, carefully placed in the exact centre of the floor. You open it. You have eaten two slices. Only two slices. How have you only eaten two slices? The entire pizza is left.

You can’t throw it out now, can you? That would be stupid. That would be incredibly stupid. You can’t do that. This is breakfast. My word, you think to yourself, what a breakfast this will be.

In the past chowing down on the left-overs might have been a source of shame: something you might not tell your friends or family, a quietly delicious moment, but one you kept to yourself out of that slight sense of being a disgusting person. But apparently, now, it is fine.

According to dietician Chelsea Amer at least.

A typical slice of pizza is better for you than a bowl of sugar-y cereal, she claims.

Whilst talking to the Daily Meal Chelsea Amer MS, RDN, CDN explained: “An average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories.’

“However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning,’ Amer continued.

“Plus, a slice of pizza contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash.”

She did concede that pizza for breakfast isn’t exactly the most nutritious option, nor is it a health food. But like James Milner playing left-back, it will tuck in, it will do a job, and it will fill you up until lunchtime, which I think is all you can realistically ask for.

Just try and make it to the fridge next time before you fall asleep.
