The roast is a British classic. A British right, almost.
Every Sunday Brits up and down the country are tucking in to plates stacked tall with roasties, veg, gravy, stuffing, Yorkshires and whichever meat takes their fancy. God, it’s a good feeling seeing all of that gloriousness before you on the table.
A recent survey has revealed the cheapest place to get a roast dinner in the UK, and in a surprising move, it’s in the very county that gives our favourite savoury pudding its name: Yorkshire.
The Mirror reports that Sheffield has the cheapest average roast dinner at just £12.20, followed closely by Leeds at £12.50.
It’s no surprise that London came in last place, with Londoners expecting to pay out around £20 for a roast dinner, which is fully ridiculous.
Newcastle helped balance things out a little, offering a roast dinner at an average price of £13.15. Looks like the North is really the place to go if a cheap roast is what you’re after.
Kirsten Bolton, from construction firm Willerby, who commissioned the survey, said: “Sundays are starting to get quite expensive.
“In days gone by a roast would set you back around £7, yet today our research shows that people are paying more than £14 on average.
“As the home of the most expensive commercial rents in the UK, it will be no surprise to learn that London is the most expensive region in the UK to order a Sunday roast. There is a massive price difference from other regions in the UK.”
You could also make it yourself at home, technically. But hey.
